Bonhoeffer's Theory of Stupidity

As I look around and see what's going on in the world, but especially, my country, I can't help but to think of Diedrich Bonhoeffer and some of his books I've read.

His Theory on Stupidity has really stuck with me.

I believe that theory and Gad Sad's book on Suicidal Empathy may be the most important writings that "we" can have if we want to maintain our "way of life".

I say this in being all for inclusivity and diversity, but when that diverse group is squarely different in its ideals than what "our" ideals are, it's a problem.

And yet, I see many of my friends that are on The Left, who are empathizing with groups of people who are directly against them.

The "useful idiots" is a real thing, alluded to by George Orwell in his book 1984, but it's not who "they" think it is.

It isn't the people they think because they are usefully idiotic empathizing suicidally for groups that want them...dead.

And as a Christian who believes in loving your neighbor, at what point did Bonhoeffer, as a pastor, go from loving his Nazi neighbors, to trying to assassinated Adolph Hitler?

How could he justify that?

Below is the ideas of the Theory of Stupidity taken straight off the Internet.

Why Stupidity is Worse Than Evil
  • Evil can be fought: Society can recognize evil, expose it, and stop it with force.
  • Stupidity is defenseless: Logic and facts do not work against a stupid person. Facts that do not fit their view are ignored or dismissed.
  • Stupidity becomes violent: When cornered by facts, the stupid person feels irritated and becomes dangerous, often going on the attack.
It is a Moral Defect, Not Low Intelligence
  • Smart people can be stupid: Bonhoeffer noted that people with high intelligence can still fall into stupidity.
  • It is a choice to surrender freedom: Stupidity happens when a person gives up their inner independence and critical thinking.
  • People speak in slogans: When you talk to a stupid person, you do not feel like you are talking to a real individual. You feel like you are listening to slogans, catchwords, and scripts that have taken over their mind.
A Social Problem
  • Groups create stupidity: People alone in solitude are rarely stupid. Stupidity happens in groups.
  • Power needs stupidity: Bonhoeffer stated that the rise of overwhelming political or religious power requires the stupidity of the crowd. As he wrote: "The power of the one needs the stupidity of the other."
  • Responsibility fades: When people join a crowd or obey power, they stop feeling responsible for their own actions.
How to Overcome Stupidity
  • Arguments do not work: Trying to use reasons to change a stupid person’s mind is useless and dangerous.
  • Only liberation helps: Bonhoeffer believed that instruction cannot cure stupidity. It requires an act of real liberation.
  • External freedom must come first: Internal liberation usually only happens after the external system of power or peer pressure is broken.

Munich Germany

The above picture is where the 1972 Olympics Mens Basketball tournament took place.

It is where the USA lost its first basketball game in the history of the Olympics, many think they got cheated.

Below is the area where the athletes stayed.

It was the sight of the PLO terrorists taking Israeli athletes hostage.

Washington D.C.

I go to Washington D.C. every spring with our school's senior class.

It really isn't bad, and we stay just off the Mall, and do so many things.

However, when I get free time, I try to do something new.

This past spring, I went to where James Garfield was shot (top pic), and where The Beatles had their first concert in the US.

The Recent Order of Events in the last Ten Years

That's not happening.

Who cares if it's happening.

I can't believe you're not for that happening.

You are a bad person.

If You Coach Long Enough...

I'm a nobody coach.

72 career wins in seven years as a head coach.

Many more wins as an assistant.

But...this will be year 36 for me coaching, and I've bounced around.

I've settled here at Silver Creek and because of that, we've won titles including two state championships, we've coached 5 players that went on to play D1 basketball, one at Purdue.

But this guy above who played at Purdue, was selected in the second round of the NBA draft.

I've coached a kid who has been drafted to the NBA with the Minnesota Timberwolves.

We're still not sure if he made the roster, will have a two day contract, or will go on internationally, but...

He was drafted by the NBA.

And I coached him, or at least around when he played.

And that's pretty cool.

Too Good For This World, Well I Live in this World

Hannah Ray passed away, and it's not good.

26 year old, second grade teacher, pretty, wonderful voice, the nicest person you will know, and she's gone now.

She's too nice for this world.

So, so, so true, but we're all selfish about wanting her to be here.

She is a believer in God and Jesus Christ, so all of us believers know she's home now with her Father.

But still...it hurts.

I'm not someone who always gets close to people because when you lose them, it hurts.

But it was hard to not admire, respect, and look up to Hannah.

And though we weren't close, and though I didn't see or speak to her often, it still hurts.

It's like there is a piece of me missing, and it feels odd.

I cannot even imagine what her parents, siblings, my children and every other friend and family member is going through because this isn't fair.

People like her are supposed to die of old age.

People like her are supposed to go on and influence and mentor thousands of people as they go through her classes.

People like her are what we need for the world to be better.

They're not supposed to leave so early.

But...

She's where we all want to end up in Heaven.

She is hearing well done good and faithful servant from Jesus.

She's in no more pain and on no machines.

She's conversing with all of the people of the Bible and all of her friends and family that have gone before us.

She is with Jesus.

And how great is that?!

Yet...

That hole that I have and how everyone else who knew her won't fill.

I heard someone say that losing a loved one is like losing a body part.

You never get over it because you're different, but you learn to adapt and move on.

How are you and everyone doing has been asked a lot.

The answer...not good, but there's been a lot of crying and a lot of laughing when sharing or thinking of her.

But it sucks.

I don't miss just her, but what she was.

It wasn't her hair, her face or anything physical, it's the way she lived and just how she...was.

I miss her.

And I pain for all those who loved her so much because she was so much the representation of Jesus's love.
